Florida Vacations 

There are few places in the United States where visitors can actually feel like they're stepping back in time. St. Augustine, Florida, is one of those places. Jam packed with interesting historical sites, incredible waterway views and more, this is an ideal spot for taking a Florida vacation.

Founded in the mid-1500s by the Spanish, this city on Florida's east coast is considered America's oldest. Its history goes back even further though. It was initially a settlement of the Timucuan Indians and was then the home of Spanish settlers.

Remnants of the past are on virtually every corner in the city's historic district that covers a great deal of ground. Within the walking area, visitors will find historic houses, shops and more. But what really makes the area stand out are the host of re-enactors that help bring history alive. Playing the roles of people from days gone by, they show visitors what it might have been like to live in the early days of this Florida city.

Demonstrations include such everyday things as cooking and sewing to even candle making and beyond. Visitors generally are so fascinated by the processes, they don't even realize the trip is "educational."

And while the architecture and people of the historic district are incredible attractions, perhaps one of the biggest features in this city is its fort. Initially built in the 1700s, the Castillo de San Marcos was a Spanish outpost meant to warn of any approaching British ships. The fort remains in great repair today and is a national monument open for tours.

In addition to historic sites, visitors to St. Augustine will find a number of other attractions. From museums and galleries to fine dining and more, this little city has a lot to offer. Plus, there are some fantastic beaches, lighthouses to visit and even a Ripley's Believe It or Not within walking distance of the historic district. When it comes to dining, this city offers a wide selection, but the fresh catches are what make many a tourist more than happy.

Lodging here includes upscale and expensive, moderate rooms and even some bed and breakfasts in the city's older homes. Inasmuch, visiting here can be done on a shoestring budget if necessary or splurging is more than possible.

Stepping into the past is what St. Augustine offers its visitors. A fascinating city that boasts America's oldest house and jail, the stop is worthy of any Florida vacation. It's ideal for the entire family, but the bed and breakfasts are even more perfect for romantic getaways.
